Everything you wanted to know about premium schach
01You mention bamboo-cane schach. What exactly is bamboo?
Bamboo is a naturally strong wood, with no additives or cuts, which helps it last for many years — far longer than many other types of schach.
02Are there different types of bamboo around the world?
Absolutely. There are more than 1,800 bamboo varieties worldwide. The bamboo we sell is MOSO, considered one of the finest varieties available.
03Why does bamboo need kosher certification if the canes are completely natural?
Bamboo canes are natural, but today's manufacturing world is complex. There can be concerns about coatings, plastic imitations, or other issues that are not always visible. At Dorotechem, we make sure our schach meets the highest mehadrin standards, with no compromises.
04Does threaded bamboo schach meet halachic requirements?
From a halachic standpoint, everyone should ask their own rabbi. From a durability standpoint, it is important to know that making holes in the bamboo weakens the schach.
05You say the schach lasts for years. How many years are we talking about?
It depends on several factors, of course, but customers have told us their bamboo canes lasted more than 15 years.
06How can you be sure the schach does not become infested?
Bamboo canes are considered a strong wood that generally does not become infested. This is not something we created — it is part of the way bamboo naturally grows. In addition, our bamboo canes go through a special process that helps keep pests away.
07Could insects be found in bamboo?
As with other types of schach, there can be a concern for mites.
08Is there a warranty on the bamboo?
Bamboo is a natural product and therefore has no warranty.
09Is bamboo accepted across different communities and traditions?
Yes. Based on inquiries we made with leading rabbis from different communities, bamboo is considered an excellent mehadrin schach from the outset. It is well known that leading rabbis and rebbes specifically use this schach because it is kosher lemehadrin.
10We've heard that this schach adds beauty to the sukkah. What makes it look so good?
Natural bamboo canes are very smooth, without thorns or loose debris falling into the sukkah. The clean texture and natural look create an impressive, refined sukkah finish.
11What makes Dorotechem special?
At Dorotechem, quality and appearance matter deeply to us. We make every effort to provide carefully selected schach, with the highest kosher standards and every hiddur. We also offer attentive service, sales points across the country, home delivery, and payment by credit card or cash, so you can enjoy premium mehadrin schach this year with no compromises.
Tips for storing bamboo after Sukkot
Ventilated storage
We recommend covering the bamboo so moisture and water do not get in.
Tie it, but do not wrap it
You can buy a dedicated bamboo storage bag to help prevent dust and moisture.
Moisture and mold
If the bamboo gets wet, it will not be damaged. Mold may form only if it stays wet or sits in water for an extended time.
Sun exposure
Sun exposure does not harm the bamboo, but it may fade its color.
On the sukkah year-round
If you want to leave the bamboo on a sukkah or pergola all year, make sure there is at least a small gap between the canes. It is also worth checking throughout the year that nothing has fallen on it, such as clothing from a neighboring apartment, to help prevent mold during rain.
During Sukkot week
During Sukkot, exposure to sun and water will not harm the bamboo, even when it is laid densely.
No clips needed
Usually there is no need to tie the bamboo to the sukkah or use clips; its weight keeps it stable so it will not blow away in the wind. You can also place a beam on top for extra security.
